#My Story Vernisha Kissoon

I have faced challenges such as stress from schoolwork, family problems, and moments when I felt misunderstood or alone. At times, I struggled with balancing my emotions and finding healthy ways to cope.

Growing up, Vernisha faced challenges many young people know too well. Balancing emotions and finding healthy ways to cope wasn’t easy.

“I overcame these challenges by talking to supportive people, such as close friends, teachers, and family members. I also relied on prayer and positive activities like music, journaling, and spending time outdoors, which helped me clear my mind and feel better.”

Having someone or something to rely on provides strength, guidance, and hope. Every young person deserves that support—it protects mental health, encourages growth, and builds resilience.

Being part of the ChildLine School Ambassador Programme (CSAP) opened Vernisha’s eyes to the importance of mental health.

“Yes, CSAP has helped me understand mental health better. I learned that mental health is just as important as physical health, and it affects how we think, feel, and behave. The programme taught me about coping strategies, how to support others, and the importance of speaking up instead of suffering in silence.”

“My message is: Listen, support, and encourage each other. Mental health is something we all share, so we must create safe spaces where people can talk openly without judgment. I encourage parents and teachers to be more understanding, and I encourage young people to reach out for help when they need it. You are never alone, and it’s okay to ask for support.”

Vernisha’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the hardest moments, hope is possible. By leaning on the people and activities that help us, and by offering support to others, we can navigate life’s challenges and create communities where young people feel seen, heard, and valued.
